Privacy Policy

Overtone is a mentor for music producers that runs inside Ableton Live, made of a desktop app and a Max for Live device. This policy describes what data Overtone handles and — just as importantly — what it never receives.
Your music stays on your machine
Overtone never uploads your audio or your Ableton project. Analysis of what you play happens locally, on your computer. When you ask the mentor for advice, Overtone sends a small text summary of the relevant context — things like track names, device and parameter settings, detected key and tempo, and compact numeric descriptions of the sound — to our servers so the mentor can respond. These summaries can't reproduce your sound.
One exception, so it's on the record: when you ask the mentor a music-theory question about a clip you captured, the notes of that clip (pitches and timing) are sent along with the question so the mentor can actually read them. They're used to generate that answer — nothing else.
What we collect
- Account data. When you sign in — with Google here on the web, or with an email code in the app — we receive your email address (and, with Google, your basic profile name) via our authentication provider (Supabase). We use it to identify your account and plan.
- Billing data. Payments are processed by Stripe. Your card details go directly to Stripe and never touch our servers; we store only your subscription status and a Stripe customer reference.
- Usage metering. We record how much mentor capacity your account has used each billing period, so we can enforce plan limits. Usage is shown to you as a percentage of your plan.
- Mentor requests. The text summaries described above are processed by our AI provider (Anthropic) to generate advice. We don't train models on your requests, and our provider's commercial API terms don't permit training on this data either.
- Error reports. If the app hits a bug, it sends us a technical crash report (stack trace, app version, OS version) so we can fix it. These reports don't contain your music, though they can incidentally include file or track names.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your data, ever.
- We don't receive, store, or train on your audio or projects.
- We don't use third-party advertising trackers. Cookies on this site exist only to keep you signed in.
Data retention & deletion
We keep account, billing, and usage records while your account is active. Want your account and its data deleted? Contact us and we'll take care of it — except records we're legally required to keep, such as billing and tax records or data needed for fraud prevention.
